My experience as a teacher
Hello everyone,
In today's blog, I will share with you a little bit of my experience teaching English to children and give you some tips that worked for me. First of all, I would like to say that I’m not an expert in this area because this was my first time teaching and maybe it will be the only one.
I had the opportunity to teach due to social service, to be honest, despite not wanting to dedicate myself to be a teacher, (because I don’t study the didactic branch) I really wanted to live that experience, that's why I decided to give classes. At the beginning, I was excited and nervous at the same time because I wanted to do a good job and I wanted the children to learn and be interested in this language because many times people are discouraged by the way this subject is taught.
Before starting this course, I knew that I wanted to do my classes in a different manner and I wanted them to learn in a fun way, so I realized that this type of teaching is called the " ludic method". Basically, at the end of each class, I used websites that contained educational games, some sites were Baamboozle (this was one of the sites they liked the most), Wordwall, Educaplay, Games4esl, and many more.
In addition, something they liked is that I taught them from Monday to Thursday, and on Fridays, we called them "the day of games" because that day we dedicated ourselves to review all the content we studied during the week. Even though it was their favorite day, it was a bit complicated for me because I had to invent or look for different activities so it wouldn't be boring, some of these activities were Simon says, bingo, Chinese Whispers, memory game, I also used an archery game, balls, balloons, etc., when they lost, I would ask them questions and if they didn't know the answer, their classmates could help them.
Another thing that helped me is that before teaching the topic of the day, I would show them a video and this helped them to learn the vocabulary or the content because it caught their attention and it was easier for them to remember or I would also do an activity like hangman or discovering the hidden message so that they could guess the topic. Besides, I used to create stories using the topics seen in class and something that caught their attention was that I used their names and looked for drawings of children similar to them and that caused them to laugh a lot, this was good because they also learned.
In short, I think this method works quite well because students learn new things while having fun and all this creates a good atmosphere in the classroom.
